The fullest chapter of the summer has begun at our SOFTECH | Codespring offices in Cluj-Napoca and Odorheiu Secuiesc: 12 computer science students from Babeș–Bolyai University have started the summer internship, the practical component of the wider Codespring Mentoring Program. The second-year students are attending various technical and soft skills training sessions, and then they will work in teams of two on six real-life projects over the next two months.

Some companies remain quiet and uneventful during the summer break. At SOFTECH | Codespring things are quite different: here, the start of the internships for students livens up the summer months every year. Thus, we welcomed in our work environment one student from the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science, and 11 students from the Faculty of Computer Science at Babeș–Bolyai University.
17 Years of Training the Software Professionals of the Future
Codespring Mentoring Program has been running successfully for 17 years in multiple cities across Transylvania. Computer science students in Cluj-Napoca and Târgu Mureș can join these specialized, themed courses from their first academic year, to complement their university curricula, gaining knowledge that meets the latest market requirements.
Second-year students enrolled in the program, in addition to the training sessions held during the academic year, have the opportunity to be enrolled into a summer internship during the academic break. From mid-July to mid-September they commute daily to our offices in Cluj-Napoca, Târgu Mureș, or Odorheiu Secuiesc. During this year’s summer internship, the 12 students will work in teams of two to develop six projects, from the initial concept up to a presentable prototype.
During this period, SOFTECH | Codespring’s software developers provide continuous mentoring to guide the students’ work. By the end of the summer, they will not only have a viable project – which they can then continue to develop and present at their final state exams and academic student conferences –, but they will also gain a lot of experience in every phase of project development, from planning and brainstorming, constructive professional debates and teamwork, all the way to the presentation of the finished “product.”
Various Projects in the Practical Section
One of the key phases of the Codespring Mentoring Program is the brainstorming session that precedes the summer internship. During this session, both SOFTECH|Codespring team members and attending students can present their project ideas, from which the community selects the most innovative ones. Those that offer creative solutions to real-world problems while also providing real development opportunities for the developers themselves. During the Codespring Mentoring Program, numerous students’ ideas proved to be innovative and went on to win awards at academic conferences. Moreover, an idea even turned into a commercial product.
In the summer of 2026, the teams will be working on the following projects:
- Homework tracker and course inventory: The application functions as a digital school directory and homework tracker that can be used by the principal, vice principal, teachers, students, and parents alike. Students remain anonymous while uploading homework: the teacher cannot see who submitted it until they have corrected and evaluated it. Students can also ask questions about their homework anonymously, though those asking malicious questions can be identified. The principal sets up the hierarchy and adds users to the application; they can also modify user roles. The software would also feature an AI-powered assistance tool: a chatbot that helps students understand the lesson but does not complete the homework for them. If a student is still unable to solve the problem even with the AI’s help, they can choose to anonymously reach out to the teacher. Parents, meanwhile, receive notifications about homework assignments whose submission deadlines are approaching.
- Image-based map overlay and navigation: A tool that lets you overlay any photographed or printed map – whether it’s a festival layout or a forest hiking trailboard – onto your phone’s built-in map. The app overlays this photo as a transparent layer on top of the actual coordinates, and from then on, you can navigate in real time using physical maps with the help of the built-in GPS. Key features: photo capture and preparation, calibration, on-site navigation, motion tracking, sharing with the community and organizers (peer-to-peer—P2P), and sharing from the company to the user (organizer mode—B2C, via QR code generation).
- Teams Ops Bot: A Teams chatbot that provides access to company platforms, APIs, and documentation. Key features: internal company Q&A—a repository of company information, ranging from basic details to project statuses and in-house industry-specific documentation; requesting time off, locking the timesheet via chat, ticketing assistance, launching pipeline jobs using natural language, querying job results and cloud platform resource information, as well as making the onboarding process easier.

TripWeaver: Travel planning software that compiles options and recommendations based on the parameters, expectations, and priorities provided by users (accommodations, round-trip travel, local transportation, activities, etc.), categorized according to the specified budget. Reviews from other travellers can also be considered. Artificial intelligence can contribute to multiple phases of the application.
5. Apartment Finder: A web and/or mobile app that allows users to search for apartments based on a complex set of criteria. In addition to the standard search options found on traditional websites, such as number of rooms, street/location, and price range, this app would also allow users to filter results based on factors such as proximity to a café, park, gym, department store, or city center. Based on the specified criteria, the software collects apartment listings from multiple sources and then share links to them. It also allows users to view statistics: the average rent in a given neighbourhood, the number of parks and stores, available transportation options nearby, etc. Based on these, users can make more informed decisions.
6. Babel – congregational interpreter service: The purpose of the software called “Babel – Virtual Congregation” is to provide real-time translation of live preaching into other languages on-site, in the church. In a multilingual setting, it is particularly useful for people who do not understand the language of the sermon to be able to read the text on their phones by scanning a QR code, or even listen to it through their headphones. The software also allows users to follow the live event or sermon via a stream, along with automatic captioning and interpretation in the selected language. The event or sermon would also be automatically archived centrally, including the additional interpretation tracks. The digitized audio recordings can later be used for more accurate, professional reinterpretation and translation.

The intensive work on these exciting projects is complemented by soft skills training sessions held throughout the summer, as well as leisure and team-building activities. All of these ensure that this summer internship will be an unforgettable experience for every student. Another enjoyable and beneficial aspect of spending the summer together is building a strong mentorship community: through their collaborative work, students and their mentors develop close professional relationships, which will serve as a huge advantage for them later on in their careers.
