As the start of the new academic year approaches, so does the end of the summer internship for second-year computer science students participating in the Codespring Mentoring Program and the summer internship organized by IT Plus Cluster in Odorhei. The two-month collaboration between the students and the mentoring IT companies culminated in IT Plus Cluster’s Mentoring Camp held in the middle of September in the vicinity of the picturesque Vargyas creek, where students showcased their projects and hiked together with their fellow students and mentors.

Last weekend, the annual IT Plus Mentoring Camp brought together more than 20 young tech enthusiasts and representatives of the IT community of Odorhei in the amazing Meresti village, right near the Varghis Creek and the Meresti Cave, popular destinations among devoted hikers. The highlight of the event was the project presentations delivered by second-year computer science students from Babeș–Bolyai University, who completed their summer internship within the Codespring Mentoring Program and the one organized by IT Plus Cluster.

Over the course of two months, about 15 IT students had the chance to work at local software development companies in teams of 2–4 members, guided by dedicated senior professionals. The internship gave them the opportunity to work on real-life software development tasks, gain valuable professional skills, and showcase the outcomes of their efforts to both peers and industry experts.

The Projects

Codespring | Softech welcomed 4 young talents in our Odorhei office, who worked on the following innovative and extremely creative projects:

  • Beeper Beekeeping Mobile App – A digital assistant for beekeepers to track hive management, queen care, feeding, medication, and honey production. Data can be entered either by voice or manually. The app has strong potential for future expansion within university group projects and thesis work.
  • Digital Health Journal – An app that helps parents and professional caregivers manage the illnesses and medication of multiple individuals. Symptoms can be logged by voice or manually, visualized on timelines and fever charts, and summarized in extracts for doctors. The concept addresses the challenge of monitoring complex care situations, with further development possible through synchronization across multiple devices.

The participating students also presented four projects developed at other local companies during the summer internship coordinated by IT Plus Cluster, the association of IT companies founded in the Szeklar Land region.

  • Interactive coding support platform – A web-based environment where developers can support one another by sharing solutions and guidance. Contributions are rewarded with experience points, encouraging collaboration and peer learning.
  • Student feedback application – A secure web platform for providing direct and anonymous feedback to teachers about lessons or entire courses. The system can easily generate diverse and multiple questionnaire formats, statistical analysis, and aims to improve teaching quality while protecting data privacy.
  • Motorcycle route planner – A community-driven application that helps motorcyclists plan routes based on interactive maps, share feedback, and enrich their journeys with photos or other interactive features. The app would also support social networking by enabling riders to recruit companions for upcoming trips.
  • Parking spot monitoring system – A real-time solution that uses surveillance camera feeds to identify free and occupied parking spots. The data could be continuously updated and displayed by streets and zones, with potential extensions such as driver notifications and additional convenience features.

After the presentations, the students had a delicious dinner and fun leisure activities together with their mentors, including an adventurous hike to the picturesque Varghis Creek and the Meresti Cave, giving them the opportunity to broaden their professional networks and enjoy the last part of their summer holiday.

Beyond the Projects: Why Internships Matter

The presentations were not only a showcase of creativity and technical skill, but also proof of how valuable internships can be for students. A summer practice offers benefits that extend far beyond classroom learning:

  • Exposure to real-world technologies: Students get hands-on experience with frameworks, tools, and development practices that cannot be fully covered in academic curricula.
  • Insight into daily workflows: They participate in the entire lifecycle of a project, gaining relevant experience in the professional routines of software development, from planning, task management and coding standards to testing and deployment.
  • Teamwork and collaboration: Working in small groups under mentorship helps students refine communication, cooperation, and project management skills.
  • Professional mentoring: Experienced developers guide students through challenges, helping them bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application.
  • Confidence building: Presenting their work in front of peers and industry representatives prepares them for future academic and professional challenges, such as students’ conference, their thesis defense, or a pitching at their future workplace or individual project.

A Year of Challenges and Commitment

This year, opportunities for summer internships were scarcer due to a slowdown in the IT market. In this context, we are proud that our company hosted students exclusively through the Codespring Mentoring Program, ensuring continuity for those who had already committed to our well-known initiative last year. These students had attended extracurricular training sessions throughout their whole academic year, demonstrating perseverance and passion for professional growth. According to Codespring Mentoring Program’s rules, we don’t let go of our students’ hands even after the summer internship: they can rely on the help of our mentors to finalize their state exams and participate in student conferences.

Looking Ahead

This year’s Mentoring Camp once again proved that talent, creativity, and dedication will shine through, even under challenging circumstances. The projects developed this year not only addressed actual, real-world problems, showing a set of innovative ideas, but also reflected the students’ ability to adapt, learn, and put their knowledge into practice effectively.

We at Codespring | Softech believe that internships and mentoring are essential to preparing the next generation of IT specialists / that’s why we started our own Mentoring Programme 15 years ago, offering complex guidance to young talents throughout their 2nd and 3rd academic years, and also contributing to the programs organized by IT Plus Cluster. By offering young talents the chance to immerse themselves in the practical aspects of software development, we contribute to a stronger, more resilient, and more innovative IT community in Odorhei and in Transylvania.
